Google Gemini
IMPORTANT: Please read our GenAI Best Practices page before using this generative AI tool with course work.
Google Gemini is a web-based, multimodal generative AI assistant developed by Google. It can generate and revise text, summarize documents, analyze data, interpret images, assist with coding tasks, and support research workflows through conversational prompts.
Although Xavier primarily uses Microsoft tools (e.g., Copilot within Microsoft 365), Gemini is available independently through a Google account and may be useful for faculty who wish to compare AI systems or explore alternative generative AI tools for instructional planning, research support, or AI literacy discussions with students.
Gemini can assist faculty with:
- Drafting or refining syllabi, assignment prompts, and instructional materials
- Summarizing scholarly articles or long-form content
- Brainstorming discussion questions or active-learning activities
- Generating sample rubrics or formative assessment ideas
- Explaining complex concepts at different levels of depth
Gemini is best used as a productivity and ideation tool. Faculty should review all generated content for accuracy, bias, disciplinary rigor, and alignment with course objectives.
